Obama vs. the other guy, 2008

John McCain Thinks Saying Something = Making it So

Has anyone else noticed that John McCain has a way of making pretty bold and sweeping pronouncements with very little substance to back it up? It happened a week ago when he declared: “I know how to win wars!”

Well, it happened again today:

I will end our dependence on foreign oil. I will end it!

Using the same magic potion that gives him the knowledge of how to win wars? In all seriousness, I think these statements show a petulant side to him. He often comes across as so convinced of his own superior character and integrity that it almost seems like an insult to him to have to explain himself. So he resorts to these declarations (“I will end it!”) which is supposed to be the final word, leaving a cowardly press corps, so insecure in their own lack of time spent in a POW camp, with the unenviable job of crossing this man by asking him the simple follow up question: “How?”

  2. It reminds me of George Bush, the decider, who also refused to allow fact to get in the way of his simple declarative sentences.
