Obama vs. the other guy, 2008

FOX: Powell to Endorse Obama [update]

UPDATE: Colin Powell’s camp is denying this story.

UPDATE 2: Powell has a statement as well:

“I do not have time to waste on Bill Kristol’s musings,” Powell told ABC News. “I am not going to the convention. I have made this clear.”

Take this with a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE grain of salt, but William Kristol is reporting that Colin Powell will endorse Obama, and may speak at the convention.

This was just reported on Neil Cavuto’s show. Kristol cites sources with direct knowledge of the talks with Obama’s camp.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell will endorse Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention, Weekly Standard Publisher Bill Kristol told FOX News exclusively on Thursday.

“He may well give a speech at the Democratic convention explaining his endorsement of Obama,” Kristol said, citing inside sources.

An endorsement by Powell could go a long way to attracting moderates and wayward Republicans to the presumptive Democratic presidential candidate.

Notwithstanding Powell’s issues on the Iraq war (and Kristol’s credibility overall), this is an endorsement that both camps are pursuing, and Powell is advising Obama as well.

A Powell endorsement would be very helpful to Obama, even taking into account the fact he has fallen out of favor with many Democrats. In the grain-of-salt department, take a look at how an Obama/Powell Ticket shapes up.

There’s no chance of that ticket, but the fact is that Powell is wildly popular with Americans overall. Having Powell give a speech at the convention is fine by me.

  1. Zoinks! It’s Bill Kristol, which means it’s probably 100% wrong, but hard not to get excited about it. Not the ticket, mind you, but the endorsement. Great PR.

  4. Just because he’s not going to the convention doesn’t mean he won’t be endorsing at convention time. Just sayin’.
