Shadowy 527 Group Launches “Ayers” Attack On Obama

Ben Smith at Politico reports that a shadowy 527 group, the American Issues Project, just launched an attack television ad about the Ayers issue in Ohio and Michigan. Here’s the ad below:

The Ayers Attack Ad From American Issues Project

The closing line of the attack ad is: “Why would Barack Obama be friends with someone who bombed the Capitol and is proud of it?” asks the narrator. “Do you know enough to elect Barack Obama?”

This ad seeks to question the tenuous ties between Barack Obama and Bill Ayers. It makes it seem like Obama supported Ayers’ attack on the Capitol—-but Obama was eight years old at the time when it happened. This kind of ad requires a STRONG slapdown, preferably featuring pictures of Obama at that age. Any ideas on what that slapdown should be?

I have one—the Obama campaign should launch a STRONG attack on the 527 itself, featuring some of the staff members that have worked for despicable Republicans, and saying that John McCain used to disown 527 groups, but now that he supports disgusting 527s like that now.

Here’s the director of the American Issues Project:

Ed Failor, Jr.–He’s the Executive Vice President of Iowans For Tax Relief—AND HE ALSO WAS AN SENIOR ADVISOR TO JOHN MCCAIN’S IOWA CAMPAIGN until he left in December of 2007.

I’m pretty sure this was coordinated with the McCain campaign.

UPDATE: Tough response from Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor (can we get him as the main press secretary, please?):

The fact that John McCain dispatched his paid consultant to launch this despicable ad from a so-called ‘independent’ committee shows how desperate he is to change the subject from his shocking disconnect with the economic struggles of the American people. He knows that Barack Obama has denounced the detestable crimes that Bill Ayers committed forty years ago.

Instead of invoking Paris, Britney and obscure sixties radicals, Senator McCain should take the day off at one of his seven homes to consider whether his support for outsourcing, tax breaks for companies who ship jobs overseas and continued spending of ten billion a month in Iraq is really putting ‘country first.’ To us, it sounds like just more of the same.

  1. Slink, unfortunately WordPress doesn’t allow for embedding anything really other than YouTube, so the video doesn’t work.

But as for the ad, we knew it was coming. Ayers is one of Hannity, Limbaugh, et als horses that they were going to ride.

You’re right, the response is to show a picture of kid Obama at that time…and then bring up Keating Five.

  2. I think the 527 should become the issue itself and McCain’s response to these 527s.

  8. Slink…seems to me one of the most beneficial ways to help the Obama campaign is to expose these 527’s regarding principals and their background, funding, attack biases, etc…It would take a good sized effort of the blogoshpere to expose the 527’s enough to get noticed by the more traditional media…if interested, how do we get this started?

  10. The Huffington Post says Experts feel the Ayers ad may violate election law. Obama agrees. By the time the FEC court decides, it will be after the election. Check out the article.
