Obama vs. the other guy, 2008

Was the Message Received?

I talked about Hillary’s very excellent speech below, and now the media chatter will inevitably turn to whether her die-hard supporters got the message. I would say that those who came in with an open mind were very likely to be ready to pony up and support Obama. As for the others, well…

But Clinton’s performance fell far short of the panacea the Democratic Party had desperately hoped for, delegates said. Some worried that, after Clinton’s public withdrawal, more voters might defect for Republican John McCain or simply stay home.

“I’m not going to vote for Obama. I’m not going to vote for McCain, either,” said Blanche Darley, 65, a Texas delegate for Clinton. Darley wore a button saying “Obamination Scares the Hell Out of Me.”

“We love her, but it’s our vote if we don’t trust him or don’t like him,” said Darley, who was a superdelegate for Bill Clinton in the 1990s.

Weeping, Dawn Yingling, a 44-year-old single mother from Indianapolis, said that the speech was “fabulous” but that she still isn’t going to work for the Obama campaign. “She was fabulous, nothing less than I expected. It’s hard to sit here and think about she would have accomplished. We’re not stupid — we’re not going to vote for John McCain,” she said. But she’ll limit her campaigning to a House candidate. “It will take a Congress as well as a president. That’s what I can do and be true to who I am.”

Some of these people are simply not reachable. Best to simply move on and ignore the media talking heads and get to work.

  1. Their hero (heroine?) asked for their help, and if SHE couldn’t sway them, no one can. Well, perhaps Bill…
This wasn’t, for them, a race for a presidential candidate; it was a race for an iconic moment.
There’s no saying to them that perhaps, if it IS the time for a female president, maybe it wasn’t the time for THIS female president.
I’m female, but originally backed Edwards, then Richardson, then Obama, so I can’t speak to the emotions, but I have worked for candidates who lost primaries and then continued on to work for their successors. It’s the nature of politics.

  2. Turner, there’s nothing we can do with these people. The press will be obsessed by them, but there’s nothing we can do.

  3. Dansac–

While I thought her speech was good, she didn’t hit McCain hard enough–only two times in her entire speech. That may be what isn’t pulling her delegates in over to support Obama, and they read that as a lack of support for Obama.

  4. Not sure I agree that was her role, Slink. I think she was there to affirm Dem unity and then pivot to the rest of the speakers.

Obama needs Democratic unity more than anything else, and this convention will help. He doesn’t have to persuade any more “swing” voters – if he gets a few more Dems on board he’ll win in a walk.

  5. Don’t they understand that if you don’t vote at all, then you’re helping McCain win? You can bet your boots that those evangelical Christians are going to be voting come November, even if they think that McCain is not “conservative” enough.

  6. Some of them will support Obama and some wont, but I loved the “regular” small-town people that got on stage and told their stories. That’s who we are fighting to get Obama elected for. They need real change and McSurge/POW will not give them a chance for it. CSPAN is the place for UNINTERRUPTED COVERAGE.

  7. Obama,

You are the first candidate the U.S. has had in a long time that has continued to spread false information from the first time you hit the campaign trail.

I find your technique one of the most offensive I have ever experienced. I find your ethics are on the border of being unethical and your manipulation of the facts most disgusting.

It is common knowledge that the media will always press United States citizens to vote for the candidate who offers them the biggest kick-backs, pay-backs, and over-all “favors”. That is you, Obama.

Then look at your over all personas: Your stance, the way you hold your head, your gestures, the clothes you wear, the pronouns and adjectives you use. Everything about you is the personification of an individual, who does NOT, let me repeat DOES NOT, have the United States citizens interests’ at heart. You are an elitist and the persona I just described is living proof — your entire appearance is proof — FACT — of what I say.

Okay – now let’s talk about education. You have a law degree but did not practice law. Why? Readers – look this one up and you will see why. And, the result is not a positive one.

Then there is the community organizer work you undertook in the state of Illinois. That, too, has been overstated and turned into something “positive” that it in fact was NOT. Dear readers – check this one out yourself as there are many Illinois citizens who will tell you the “truth.”

My education – NOBAMA – is equal to or greater than your education. I do have the same ability as you to influence U.S. Citizens: And I certainly am taking the opportunity to exploit you for what you truly are.

You see I am an educator, who works for a famous “Research One” institution, who has the ability to write Journal Articles that all college students will use for research. The true facts about you will come out and in a place that will most definitely do the most good – to influence voters “young voters” on how to spot an individual who does not represent the United States in the capacity as he states he will. Make no mistake, Obama, people will definitely know the subject of the Journal Articles is referencing you and your 2008 Presidential campaign.

See you in “honest” fact-finding print.

  8. versaille: I gotta say that your veracity and credibility are severely hurt by the fact hat you’re copy and pasting the same biased and inaccurate response to several different posts on here regardless of their content. May I suggest that you should actually respond to the post with original thought if you want your opinion to be valid at all?
