Obama vs. the other guy, 2008

New Obama AD

How about this Ad!

This is what I’m talking about. Obama has found his stride on this issue. With every gaffe McCain makes, Obama is up in his grill and is punching him in the mouth. Script here:

BO V/O: I’m Barack Obama and I approve this message.

V/O: John McCain admits he doesn’t understand the economy

So who advises him?

Carly Fiorina, the fired CEO who got a $42 million golden parachute.

Phil Gramm, the ex-Senator who pushed through deregulation, and called Americans hurt by this economy “whiners.”

Then there’s George Bush, whose disastrous policies McCain wants to continue.

They think the economy is fundamentally strong.

We know they’re fundamentally wrong.

Indeed.

  3. Wow, that last comment (Fundamentally strong/wrong) knocked me off my seat. It’s about time Obama got up and starting giving McCain Hell, and without smears or irrelevant personal issues – just cold, hard facts.

  4. I would like to hear Obama on the issues… I like change… what’s he going to do to make change? If everything is wrong I want to know how he is going to fix it.

    Obama hates America?

  7. Wow Charles, you obviously haven’t been listening to Obama speak then because he provides lots of details of what he’s going to do and how.

Listen to his convention speech, he didn’t do like the Repuglycans and spend the time smearing his opponent, he talked specifics. For example, how about the issue Repuglycans have been lying about in commercials, taxes. Obama said he’ll undo some of Bush’s tax cuts that excessively favored the wealthy, those making over $250K/yr, and then use that money to fund tax cuts to remaining taxpayers. McCain’s position is just more of the same, tax cuts without any explanation of how he will fund them, that means more of Bush’s deficit spending. Obama said he’ll close some of the tax loopholes such as the one that lets investment managers treat their income as investment income which means they pay a lower percentage of income taxes then their secretaries even though they can be earning millions per year. Obama’s proposed stopping Bush’s tax handout’s in the $100’s of billions to big oil even though they are making world record profits. Everyone that has actually crunched the numbers has said that McCain’s plan will cost roughly 50% more then Obama’s and that McCain’s plan will perpetuate Bush’s disproportionate massive cuts to the wealthiest 1% of taxpayers.

You end your comment with the wink and a nod question that Obama hates America? How blind can you be after 8 years of George Bush. He has nearly bankrupted the country (and is still working on it), he has allowed BinLaden to go free, he has pushed our military to the breaking point on a pointless war, he has privatized huge portions of our government including parts of the military, he has squandered our world reputation, he has rolled back the progress of the last thirty years in education and environmentalism, he has turned science back a hundred years by injecting politics into it, he has trampled our constitution, he has violated so many human rights issues it’s appalling, he has introduced whole scale spying on the entire American public by their own military, and the list goes on and on and on. It’s time for people like you to wake up and look at what’s happened, stop playing politics and do what’s right, what’s right for the country, what’s right for it’s citizens, not what’s right for your political party. There has been an ever lengthening list of true Conservative leaders; political, journalistic, economists, etc that have been standing up in support of Obama because they have been listening, and they do hear Obama talking about the issues, and they like what they are hearing.

There is no doubt that McCain loves America, he served in the military and fought to protect America from the Vietnamese (?). Obama choose a different path, one of community service. Being very intelligent (which the Repuglycans seem to think is a bad thing in our countries leaders, better to be an average Joe with poor grades) he pursued a law degree from a top notch university. He could have easily pulled down a high paying job in a big law firm but instead decided to work as a civil rights layer and community activist. He turned down the easy option to make big bucks to help protect the rights of the American public. He wasn’t simply following in his families footsteps, he made a choice to do something he believed in. That’s the kind of leader I can believe in and I find it very sad that you can’t see that after 8 years of Bush’s lack of leadership.

  9. Michael Till,

If you want to be picky, she was “forced” out. When you are not doing your job, the stock market and the board will let you know it. Apparently, Carly can’t run a corporation either.

  10. Hey Mark Till: Carly wasn’t fired? There’s a difference between being fired and the board of directors asking you to step down? See company press release: http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/newsroom/press/2005/050209a.html

BTW, the company’s stock was 50% lower at the time she stepped down (but not fired) compared with when she “stepped up.”

Of course facts don’t prevent you from being vulgar.

I found some pretty compelling evidence here (http://yourdailynanners.wordpress.com/2008/09/09/barack-obama-is-a-muslim-nanners-has-the-proof/) that he was a Muslim. And we all know what that means.

I suppose Obama understands the economy….no wait, he understand Socialism so everyone can bring up those who can’t make it. America was founded on Capitalism, you work, you succeed, you deserve it.

  17. The problem with blaming Bush for today’s economic woes is that his policies didn’t really do all that much. The tax cut for the wealthy wasn’t very generous, only a few percentage points amounting to less than a few billion dollars in taxes vs. the few trillion dollars in annual tax receipts.

The real problem is CEOs and upper managers being greedy, lending money to those who can’t repay them and building paper empires made of booked profit for money not yet generated by bizarre and exotic financing structures. Then, when they couldn’t collect the money, the financial backing of Wall Street began to collapse.

Of course thinking that the economy is fundamentally strong is very much incorrect. It’s been wounded in one of its main pillars, the financial system.

    Comment by gfish | September 19, 2008 | Reply

  18. It is a plain and simple fact that the economy is still very strong. Anyone with even the tiniest fragment of inteligence would see that. We are all being led down the path to a poor economy because of the recent stress driven by the home loan crisis, but the economic driver is still strong. Sure we have some unemployement, and it may even be rising a bit, but 95% of the work force is still working.
The economy should have fallen apart with rising gas prices over two years ago. The rise in the cost of gas did not move the economy. The gas prices had to hit $5.00 before Americans began to rebel, and quit driving. Yet, the cost of moving goods and services was also being affected all along. We just kept on rolling like nothing happened. The economy should have seen a bump immediately. In the meantime, we finally approach Europe and countries like Singapore with our gas prices and now we have a crisis.
The real culprit is the mortgage crisis. This phenomenon began well over two years ago also. The movement was intended to get more people into housing. Some very poor people could afford housing with the stupid rules that were invented by the lenders. Under the old tried and true rules of lending, these borrowers would never have gotten a nickle from a bank. Many of the so called “poor” played the game to the hilt. They applied for mortgages that were higher than the selling price of the home they were buying. This meant they walked away from the closing with a new house and cash money in their pockets. Within a few months these so called “poor” people defaulted on their loans and lived in the houses free until they could be foreclosed. The banks and mortgage companies got it stuck up their butts.
BO and his like had to see this happening. I am not a banker, I am a retiree, and I saw it happening. Why didn’t BO do something about it? After all, he is a U.S. Senator from Illinois. The least BO could have done was to make one of is eloquent speaches denouncing the practice to the senate. The problem is that BO could not let a good thing for his people pass.
I lived through the “cold war,” to defeat the spread of communism, and now the prospect of a liberal presidential candidate who wants to turn this country into a socialistic state is scaring the hell out of me.

  19. Grumpajoesplace,

Hmmm. I’m not quite sure which economy you’re watching. All of our economic indicators point towards recession, and quite significant at that. The only thing that is keeping us above board is our GDP. And that isn’t a reliable indicator. I believe you identify quite well the issues that at hand in the economy. However, the fact that lending and investment banks, insurance companies, and mortgage companies have been bailed out by our Republican big government (ironic, isn’t it?) isn’t an indication to you that our economy is on the rocks? (I’m more independent than one party or another, but don’t you think your socialist shot is a bit unusual given the fact that a Republican administration is calling the shots? AND saying the economy is in crisis?

In addition, your statements about the “poor” buying houses is a bit slanted and oversimplified. As a previous home owner, of which it was our first, the banks are pretty much interested in one thing: your money. In addition, if you don’t have a good real estate agent or a huge amount of time to cover all the financial nuances of real estate economics and jargon, you’ll get schooled the first time. The “poor” are likely just that, although there are always exceptions.

In addition, heard much about the European Union and their citizens’ state of happiness in their socialism? Health care taken care of, no questions asked. And good health care, where the doctors and nurses still make an income comparable to those who work here. They’re not hurting. None of this bi-partisan crap. I don’t here anyone complaining about the need for greater capitalism over there.

The generations of big business gains and squandering money for the name of good economy needs to be shut down, in addition to the manner with which that feeds our health care. In my opinion, we need a bit more socialism. Capitalism hasn’t worked so well lately…

  24. To anonymous —

There isn’t time in an ad for Obama to lay out the specifics of what he would do to meet this crisis. Fortunately, he has already explained that multiple times, so all anyone has to do if they want to be informed about his plans is to check out some of his outstanding speeches on the subject. Like this one at Cooper Union last March. While he was being attacked non-stop about Wright, Rezko, etc., he rose above all that to focus on our ailing economy (and correctly predicted the consequences of continued inaction).

Here’s the video, since you wanted more info. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSuT5zN2SPI .

If you want more information, check out the letter he wrote about the impending mortgage crisis a year and a half ago (http://obama.senate.gov/press/070322-obama_urges_ber/), before it became common knowledge that our mortgage industry was crashing. Or his plan to end energy speculation, from June of this year. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8aezHJ66Jg&feature=related

It cracks me up how people complain that Obama gives inspiring speeches that don’t include specifics, and then when he does give specifics, whether in a speech or in some other format, they ignore it. The man has been ahead of the curve on every major issue that has hit our country in the past few years, from Iraq to Afghanistan and Pakistan to the foreclosure crisis to the energy crisis to the current financial market crash. Face it, folks, he knows what he’s talking about.
